History and castle
Known as Castrileonis in a document of 1092, the medieval town grew around its defences. The castle bears the name of Ruggero di Lauria; the Castelluccio and Cannizzu tower also belong to its fortified landscape. Under the Gioeni, Castiglione became a marquisate in 1517 and a principality in 1602. The community recovered some civic freedoms in 1612; the Peculio grain fund was established in 1636.
